Position Filled: Project Manager for Biosecurity, Education

The Biosecurity Program at the Federation of American Scientists is expanding.

Job Title: Project Manager for Biosecurity

Location: Washington, D.C.

Description: FAS is looking for a smart, energetic individual to help manage the Biosecurity Program and further develop existing research programs on biological and chemical weapons. Job duties include developing high-quality educational material, including expanding our already top notch dual use education modules to include plant pathogens and other agricultural topics, creating an educational training video for the FBI based on past FAS research, engaging the biosecurity community to utilize the Global Forum on Biorisks online community portal and assisting with major conferences for the Virtual Biosecurity Center (VBC).

Candidates should have taken graduate-level courses in biology or chemistry and have knowledge of html, web design, and image/video editing. Familiarity with Flash, MySQL database management, and WordPress blog software is highly desirable but not essential. Strong writing skills are necessary and the candidate should have previous scientific publications.

FAS professionals are expected to be highly motivated and able to work independently. They are expected to be able to analyze complex issues and summarize findings; communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; have strong organizational skills; be capable of prioritizing work assignments in a heavy workload environment; and possess superior research and information technology skills.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintains an active network of research and collaborative partners in the biosecurity community and attends seminars and events to stay current in the research area.
• Creates new dual use education module(s) on plant pathogens and other agricultural topics. Update and expand current modules.
• Develops new and innovative educational products
• Creates an educational training video to help FBI agents better engage scientists, and partake in outreach activities with the FBI.
• Engages the biosecurity community to join and utilize the Global Forum on Biorisks (GFBR) of the Virtual Biosecurity Center (VBC).
• Performs national and international outreach for FAS biosecurity/the VBC and with the FBI
• Assists with the planning and running of VBC conferences.
• Administers and helps maintains existing biosecurity projects, website, blog, and list serve. This includes updating the education section of the FAS and VBC website.
• Identifies funding and outreach opportunities and prepares proposal submissions.
• Interacts with the other project managers at FAS, the wider policy community, and the media.

Education: Ph.D. in Biology, Heath Science, or related field; Master’s degree considered. Experience working with biosecurity, chemical weapons, and health policy issues is desired.

    FAS is a great organization to work for. I was there for 5 years and I had a fantastic experience. I recommend anyone start a career there who has the necessary qualifications.
