FAS Needs Your Help: Become a Member During this Critical Time in Nuclear Security

Friends,

Thank you for your interest in the work of the Federation of American Scientists (FAS).

Last week, the Obama administration released the total number of nuclear warheads in the U.S. stockpile — 5,113 — a number that was classified for decades. In February 2009, FAS expert Hans Kristensen published an estimate that now turns out to have been only 87 warheads off. Over the past week, Kristensen’s estimate and FAS efforts on nuclear security have gained widespread recognition in the mainstream media.

This summer FAS will take the lead to educate policymakers, the press, and the public on all aspects of the new START agreement, CTBT ratification, and NPT resolutions. Now FAS needs your help.

To provide this assessment of our nation’s security, support from our membership is vital. We cannot do it with membership dues alone. I ask if you’re a current member, please consider making an additional gift of any amount — even $50 makes a difference. For those of you who are not members yet,  I ask that you consider becoming a member today — your membership contribution of $50 or more will make a critical difference at this important time in history.

Last year, President Obama committed his administration to seeking “the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.” Between the negotiation of a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) agreement; a historic, unprecedented White House nuclear security summit; renewed efforts to end nuclear testing worldwide through enactment of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT); and the current Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, the international community has revitalized the idea of a world free of nuclear war and nuclear terrorism.

A contribution by May 31st will allow FAS to maximize our impact at this critical time. Your contribution will enable FAS to:

- Brief Congress and administration officials on all facets of the new START, CTBT, and NPT Review Conference resolutions.

- Provide a technical assessment of our nation’s security to policymakers, the press, and the public.

- Bring scientists and policymakers together to develop and implement best security practices for dismantling nuclear weapons and remaining usable nuclear materials.

- Support the FAS Strategic Security Program.

By joining FAS, you will become connected to one of the most respected science policy think tanks in America. Learn more about FAS membership benefits.

FAS experts have worked since 1945 to reduce the risk of nuclear war. Today, you can become part of the tradition of bringing scientific knowledge to bear on critical security decisions by making a contribution of $50 or more by May 31st.

If you have any questions about making a contribution or FAS efforts over the summer, please don’t hesitate to send me an email at jwright@fas.0rg.

Thank you for your support!
